  • Compile a chronology of your interactions with the scammers and specific amounts of money transferred. You can use receipts, bank records, or credit card statements for this. Call the customer service number for your bank. Contact your bank as soon as possible after you discover that you’ve been victimized by a scammer. You may be able to recover some or all of your money. However, you generally must notify your bank within 30 days of the transaction. 

  • Your credit or debit card has a customer service number on the back. Operators typically are available on these lines 24 hours a day. Follow the automated prompts and select the option for reporting fraud.
  • Your bank also has a dedicated fraud line. Check the Bank website. For bank transactions, you may also be able to go into a branch during business hours, if you prefer to deal with someone face-to-face.

Provide information about the scam to your bank.  Remain calm, and describe the facts of the scam in sequential order. Be as detailed as possible, including the date and amount of the transaction. If there were multiple transactions, be prepared to explain why you sent the scammers more money.

  • Take the name and any identification number of the customer service representative you talk to. Ask if they have a direct number so you can talk to them again if necessary. If you have physical documentation, find out how you can submit it.

File a complaint with the Central Bank of your country if you are not attended to. If you can present evidence to a reasonable extent that you were the victim of a scam, your bank may be legally obligated to refund the money. The bank will contact the account holder of the account you were scammed with and withdraw the money from the account. Government agencies under the Central Bank that protect consumer rights can help you get your money back if your bank refuses to cooperate.

Working With Law Enforcement i.e The Police; 

The major reason for contacting the police is so they can work with your Bank in tracing down the Scammer. The Bank might be able able to get the location of the scammer by looking at the address but bank staff can go and arrest a criminal, they don’t have authority to do such. Here is where the police come in.

Submit a report to local law enforcement. When you talk to an officer, be as clear and detailed as possible. Stick to the facts, and avoid introducing any speculation about the identity or motives of the scammers if you don’t have any direct evidence.

  • Get the name and get familiar with the officer who takes your report. You’ll need to get a written report when it’s ready from the police officer to officiate your complaint.

Cooperate with any continuing investigation. Because of the difficulty of tracking down scammers, police may not do more than a cursory investigation. However, if they do manage to identify the scammers, you may be called upon to talk to prosecutors or testify at trial.

  • If the scammers are caught and brought up on charges, you may be able to get some or all of your money back through criminal restitution. You’ll only be able to get back the money you can prove you paid to the scammers, so make sure you keep all receipts, bank or credit card statements, and other documentation.
